The School Built for Second Acts ¹

Not a filming location: the state conservatory where, in her late twenties, Lim Sun-woo went back to school to become an actor for the second time.

This is not a filming location. It is the campus Lim Sun-woo enrolled in, in her late twenties, after four years working an office job and deciding to become an actor for the second time.² The School of Drama, where she studied, sits on KNUA's Seokgwan-dong campus, in Seongbuk-gu, along with the university's film, visual arts and traditional arts schools.³

Nothing about a conservatory campus is unusual on its own. What makes it worth a piece in this magazine is what it represents in her specific record: not a first step, but a second one, taken deliberately, years after a first career had already come and gone.

Korea National University of Arts is a public, state-run conservatory: there is nothing here to withhold the way there would be for a private address. We are printing it because naming the actual school an actor returned to, at an age when most of her cohort would already be several years into a career, says something a vaguer "she studied acting" would not.

We do not know what her four years in an office job were like, why she left, or what made her choose this particular route back rather than another one. The public record gives us the fact of the return, not its reasons, and we are not going to invent the rest.

For what it's worth, KNUA's drama and film schools sit within reach of Daehak-ro, the dense cluster of small theatres a few kilometres south that has run Korea's studio-theatre scene for decades: the ordinary geography of where Seoul trains people for stages and screens nobody outside the city has heard of yet. We are not claiming she performed there. We are noting that the map around her second debut is a small one.
